A West Auckland author is bringing a bit of bawdy merriment to her new Christmas songs.

Jane Stephens book 'pon my Word! consists of original poems with some paired to the famous sounds of Christmas carols.

And they each have a mischievous twinkle.

Jane Stephens says she likes to put a smile on people faces through her poems. 

"They may be a touch risque," Stephens says.

She says they would appeal to seniors and students who want to get together at Christmas at have a sing-song.

Poems include O Come Ye Unfaithful and an alternative version of the Noah's Ark tale.

"When I've been in a situation when I couldn't hold back my laughter, I have had to run home and get my pen to write," she says.

Usually, Stephens focuses on writing educational texts for children about animals.

This is her first published book of Christmas poems.

"I grabbed a handful of poems out of the bottom of my desk and I went to a writers meeting.

"My girlfriend said 'for goodness sake – put them together and get them published'."

Stephens originates from west England where "they're all a bit nuts", she says.

She began writing verse age 12, when her English teacher commissioned a Christmas poem from her.

Since then, she has written around 70 to 80 rhyming verse poems, which vary from comedic to tragic.
